If you have some advices or articles about Elma  send them to us
and we publish it.
We have some useful articles, but they are in Russian. We hope that with your help articles in English will appear soon below.

Now we are glad to present you
The Article about levelmaking and about leveldesigners.
Some of the most famous designers tell some words about themselves and give advices to all, who wants to make nice levels.
Maybe in future there will be second part of this article, where their advices give some other levelmakers.
Thanks to these people, who gave their advices to us all:
zworqy, Ville_J, Juble, zebra, Undiente.

And now - the article:
1. Tell some words about you (name, where you are from, age, and so on).

zworqy:  I am Jonas, soon 25 years old from Sweden.

Ville_J: Ok my name is Ville Jankala, known as Ville_J in elmascene. I'm

17-year-old boy from Finland,  studying in 2nd class in upper secondary

school.

zebra:  My nickname is zebra and i'm from finland. I'm kind of elma veteran already, my age is 22.

Juble: Nick: Juble  Country: Australia  Age: 19

Undiente: Pablo de la Ossa, Valencia (Spain), 16 years old, ...

2. How long have you been playing elastomania? When did you start creating levels?

zworqy: I have been playing Elma since November 2000. I also played some Across in 1998, and made some utlra-n00b Across levels :D

Ville_J: I think I have been playing now for 5 years, though I'm not so sure. I guess it was somewhere around the year 2000 when I found elma. I started creating levels at quite the same time, but those levels were just crap.

Yes it's amazaing what difference 5 years' practicing can make :)

zebra:  I have played since it was published. I think it makes approximately 7 years. I started to make levels as soon as I got the newer version of across where there was level editor.

Juble: 3 years, yes its along time!

Undiente: When my brother downloaded action supercross in finals of 2000 i believe, then i found elastomania and downloaded it...

I started doing levels because i have never liked the levels to

download, from the first time i get elma, i made levels. Three or

fours years ago i have tried Insane Guy, Droo and Olliz's levels, and

i loved them. So I do levels only for me, i don't want others to like

them. If you like them, very nice! ^^
3. Do you like to make levels? Is it boring?

zworqy: Levelmaking is usually fun, but lately I haven't had any imagination, that makes it less fun :(

Ville_J: Yes I like making levels alot. If I woldn't enjoy it, I wouldn't be

making levs. Well, now I haven't been creating levs for a while, at least I

haven't finished any good ones to be published. I don't quite know why, but I think I'll be soon making new levels again. Last one I can remember was that Pirate Ship level, god it's long time ago.

zebra:  I love to make levs. I wouldn't do it if it was boring. I even like more

designing levs than playing those because i suck at hoyling.

Juble: Well first off, don't bother using the editor if you don't like it. To me,

the editor is the biggest part of elma. But if you are half way through a
level and get bored, leave it and finish another day instead of having a
good first half and a crap second half.
Undiente: I love to make levels, without that, i wouldn't have played elma

more than 1 week. Now i don't play elma, rarely I start it and only

to make a "level" (without pictures, not finished, just for having

some funny) and i have done hundreds of levels, a lot of them

unfinished...and another's lost or deleted. It is boring to see that

noone plays them.
4. Who is your favorite levelmaker?

zworqy: MP and Ville_J are some seriously skilled levelmakers. Also Zebra is very good.

Ville_J: My absolute favorite lev maker is either Olliz or MP. Their levels are quite different styles, so I can't decide. Olliz makes (or unforuntalty

made, he's not active anymore) very nice looking and driving levels, and

I'm (was) always excited to see his new creations. MP makes very good contest levels, with crazy shortcuts and wicked styles to be invented. He can also make different kind of levels, he has his own Blade, 2hard, Sword and Timex series which all represent different styles. I adore MP's and Olliz' levels.

zebra:  I'm in team TAP (the apple placers), and i think my team members are my fav levelmakers. That means at least jonsta, devan, 8-ball and juble.

Juble: Timmo and m0nkeii.

Undiente: As I said, Insane Guy (I have done some levels with him, and some levels with his funny style), Ville J (his old levels), Droo, Olliz, James (not too productive guy), ...that kind of levels. Some of them have

stopped making levels.
5. How many levels have you already created? (approximately)

zworqy: Let's see... 31 normal levels, 29 battle levels, ca 10 levels for cups, some small levelpacks... totally around 110-130 levels.

Ville_J: This is quite impossible question, but I'll try :) In my "original" VJ

series there are so far 64 levels, well  few are still waiting to be

published. Then there is my InC serie, which contains 20 levels. Then

several LOM levels, lets give a guess there are maybe 10 of them. Then some other levels for King Cup, and other contests, let's make another 10. Various section contains 4 levels by me, if we don't count those LOM levels again :) Then some levels I've made, but not finished completely or haven't published, I guess there are something around 50 of them. Plus all my old crappy levels, there must be almost hundret of them. So there must are over 200 hundred levels I've made, maybe even 300. Impossible to say more accurate.

zebra:  I think it's somewhere near 1000. I can't say exactly but for sure it more than 700. And despite the big number of levels, i always try to keep the quality high.

Juble: over 1000. :)...some not so good.

Undiente: Dunno, finished, around 150. Unfinished, lots lots lots. I do them only for pass the time or getting funny. I have though on making an

ftp with them, but noone will use it =P

I also have CLASSIFIED the levels by styles.  UndBig for big big

levels, UndPip for pipes, UndTrc for tricky ones, Vortex for strange

levels, Sadic for battles, and some more no-uploaded
6. Your favorite level (made by you) send it with the answers.

zworqy: Zworqy29 - Applatforms

Ville_J: Well, I had to play all my levs through to make a decision hehe :) I

think my favourite level is Pirate Ship, don't know why. Maybe because it's the newest or maybe because it has my own lgr. Well anyways I don't have that Pirate Ship level on this computer, so here's a link to download it:

http://www.grafopoint.com/load/Piratelev.zip

lgr file can be dloaded here:

http://www.moposite.com/downloads/lgrs/pirate.zip

zebra:  Well, this is a hard question. I like for example my IFLP levels (a level pack made by my team).

You can get those levs from

http://www.freewebs.com/theappleplacers/IFLP.zip

Juble: A level I recently sent to wcup, called 'Blue Meanie'.

Undiente: How hard...I can't remember all my levels, probably all (with some exceptions) of my published levels, and the unfinished levels, sorry.
7. How much time did you spend creating levels (at the average, maximum)?

zworqy: A level can take hours to make, but I usually

only design levels for like 5-10 mins at a time, so it can take days to make a level.

But if i'm in the right mood I can make levels fast too.

Ville_J: Hmm maybe avarage 2 hours per lev, longest ones have taken me probably more than 7 hours to make.

zebra:  I think an average time for good battle level (which i usually make) is 20 minutes. A short one can be made in 5 minutes and a long cup level takes maybe 3 hours.

At least when I was making 'Looking for Apples' -level, i spent way more

time there, i think maybe 10-15 hours. You can download it at

http://koti.mbnet.fi/zebra/elma.html

Juble: Well battle levels take 10-30mins, LOM levels took 2-3 days and the average juble levels take an afternoon. :)

Undiente:
Uh oh...depend, if i have a perfect idea, 5-10 minutes doing the map,
around 5 mins to put the grass and 5 mins more to the pics. If i don't
have a great idea or a trick don't works as I though, it can be more.
When I'm 30 mins doing the map of a level, normally i start being
bored, so I stop, and rarely I continue it (as I say everytime, with
exceptions). This is the cause of all my unfinished levels =P.
Levels like Und22 or Und93, 94, 96 or 98 (heh) are the most expensive,
because I try it a lot of times before finishing the map and i have to
change the starting point some times.
8. Your idea of ideal level, main things. What kind of levels do you like to create the most?

zworqy: The perfect level has multiple routes, is 40-50 secs long and is not too hard.

Ville_J: I think levels should be both interesting and good looking. It is always nice to invent something new, though it's very hard nowadays. Mostly I like to create cruising levels, with not any hard parts. Just pure fun driving. Sometimes I like to create more tricky levels with shortcuts, but there aren't much of those.

zebra:  The main thing is playability. I hate levels with lots of pictures and

stuff if there are no styles at all. A good levels is always possible to finish with multiple styles. I like to make most 20sec battle levs. They are easy to make and ppl like to play them.

Juble: main things:

1. Unique levels - nobody wants to play a level with the same suff in it as
a level they have played before.
2. Time -  Yes, take time in making levels. do not rush them!.
3. Backround- Only use 'sky' as a background, all the others make you sick
after years of playing. :)
4. Linier Ground - nobody likes little bumps in the ground, it gets quite
annoying. You cant go wrong with straight vertexes.
5. Polygons behind pictures- sticking a picture in front of polygon is
cruel and evil to the player. So dont do it!
Undiente:

That ones that i think are called "trickie", but i really dunno. Just

'think how the fuck can be that passed through and then, pass it' and

not playing thousands of times to get best times
9. Some advices to leveldesigners-beginners. What mistakes they shouldnt do?

zworqy:

* Remember that people don't know how you think when making the level,

so don't make levels with only one very specific way of finsihing it.

Try to make some hard, fast style(s) and some easy, slower style(s).

* Thin grass usually look better than thick grass.

* Try to put different tricks in the level, not just one.

* Be careful with gravity. If there is many gravity apples in a level it

might be impossible

for people to understand how to drive.

* The most important advice: Levels should be FUN! :D

Ville_J: My advice would be not to quit levmaking if someone says your levs are horrible. Believe me, everyone would have said that same thing to me when I started my level designer career :) Also, pay attention to how your level look. Always use grass. Well, the grass isn't necessarity, but you gotta be good level designer to manage to make interesting level without grass. The same thing goes when choosing the background. Use only sky there. When picturing levels, don't do it in 2 mins. You gotta place every picture carefully, not just throw it somewhere on the screen. Flying boxes and trees are the worst thing a lev designer can do. Oh and yes a one thing: do not make invisible polygons. Of coz you can use them to get into secret areas, but then the invisible polygons cannot disturb when playing the level normally. Also, gravity apples are quite disliked, if they aren't used correctly.

zebra:  First of all, forget these things: invisible walls, gravity apples, speed rails. Try to design first an easy level with long vertices. It's always good to have just small amount of vertices instead of very much. Especially, when you are making speed loops,

try to remember this thing.

The main thing in level design is to test, test, test and test your lev.

The more you test the lev, the better it will be.

After the level is fully tested, it's time to add the grass and pictures.

At least grass is mandatory part if you want to make your level playable, but remember that the design is even more important.

Juble: Practice!, I self tought myself how to make levels and do all the fancy stuff in the editor. But then agian the Unique factor comes in, keep your levels original. Also check other designers levels in the editor!

Undiente:
Make the levels only for you (like me), and...nah forget that.
Do whatever you want, but making levels is only to have fun and
playing them is only to have fun, because elma is only a game.
10. Some else you want to add.

zworqy:

Ville_J: Well, I hope my writings can help people to create better levels :) Do not quit making levels, custom levels are the force keeping Elma still alive after 5 years. I also love playing new levels, so I'm waiting for new great talents to come up. Good luck with the editor! :)

zebra:  Keep on playing my levs, there will be a big new level pack in 2006, more info later :)

Juble: Make levels, the scene never has enough of them. :)

ps: you were lucky I was bored :)))
Undiente:

Lalalalaaralaa. Lililiiii lalaa, now that i stopped playing elma and

stopped being a levelcreating robot, someone asks me for my levels,

what kind of world is that?

oh, yes: If you want levels, ask me
